Do you forage on public land in CT? If so, have you encountered any problems with various state and local regulations?
ReplyDeleteWe forage for ourselves on private property of friends and relatives. We often weed a lot of plants from our small tomato bed and pluck weeds from the foundation near the house we live in. When we teach classes at nature centers or land trusts, we stress that we are using the property as an outdoor classroom, and that people should NOT return to these locations to collect for themselves.
ReplyDeleteThere are laws in CT that prohibit the removal of any plant matter from state land and we follow this law. Often places like town soccer fields have mowed areas that abut woods, and that is a pretty good place to collect berries without breaking laws. Along dirt roads without a lot of traffic we will sometimes collect mushrooms if the land is not posted. Respectful foragers should respect property laws and state, federal, and local laws when it comes to trespassing. This is very often why when people ask to "tag along with us" when we go out, we decline: we are already on land with someone's permission, and are not at all willing to share our "spots" and bring people to a place where they don't have permission to collect wild foods..
